MAART is a Techno and Tech House DJ from London, UK.

MAART (aka Martin Sandford) is part of DJ, Producer, Promoter duo Dark Matter, who have been creating and playing Tech House and running parties across the South East since 2009.

I have loved dance music for as long as I can remember, and have grown through different styles and genres. My passion now is Techno and Tech House music, but before this I was playing electro house and nu disco, and way back before this, back in the good old days of vinyl, it was all about trance and hard house.

Before all this my introduction to music was full on classical. Playing the Piano and Violin as a child, playing the Violin in junior orchestras that would go on tour around Europe, music was very much part of my life. Finding the Piano a much more solitude instrument to play, I found a more social outlet and joined a Big Band playing keyboard. This was what spurred me on to teach myself the Saxophone, which when I was finally good enough, switch to playing for the Big Band.

After growing up some more I went to University, and after my first year ended up not playing any of my instruments. I was far too distracted by having new fun, having played in bands and orchestras for years, the novelty had worn off, and going out drinking and clubbing seemed like a lot more fun. (and it was fun!!)

This all lead to my love of house in all forms, getting my first pair of belt drive turntables, and spending hours and hours learning the art of mixing. In 2009 my friend JP and I started up our DJ duo ‘DARK MATTER’. We started running parties in Reading, and messing around making music. We soon started creating some decent Tech House tracks, which have been played around the globe at clubs, festivals, and even on BBC Radio 1.

Now Dark Matter live at either ends of England, we often play out apart, which is why I’ve created my solo DJ persona MAART.
